A 26-year-old woman from Texas was accused of murder and committing ‘self-induced illegal abortion’. Lizelle Herrera was arrested and taken into custody after she intentionally and knowingly caused the death of an individual by self-induced abortion.
It wasn’t made clear what she did exactly, but she remained jailed until she was released on a $500,000 bond.
The Sheriff didn’t say under what law she was charged. It doesn’t apply as a homicide, says the law professor Stephen Vladeck.
The state of Texas has criminalized the people’s choice of their own bodies and left them with no options.
The charge against Herrera has been dropped, says District Attorney Gocha Allen Ramirez. Ms. Herrera will not face prosecution for the incident, but all the events have taken a toll on her and her family.
